Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has garnered an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah was raised in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah means gentle and very generous. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was eight years old. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah began beatboxing with the women's fresh rap group. Latifah became part of the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of a group of MCs and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. Then he gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and made a deal with Latifah in 1988 to release her first track Wrath of My Madness.
